Cold Caseoffers a representative overview of works by a Czech painter who has spent part of his life living in France and the USA. On both the personal and the universal level, Hnízdil’s figural art focuses on man and the human condition. His paintings and sculptures depict the human figure in various, often unusual, positions in which he goes beyond the boundaries of finality. He works in a broad range of genres, from portraits of specific people or abstract likenesses in the form of skulls that sometimes take on a theatrical character, all the way to existential generalizations in a landscape of human skulls. Hnízdil builds mental landscapes, using traditional painting techniques to create contrast between light and dark and to create the illusion of three-dimensionality through light. The exhibition will present works ranging from his earliest paintings from the 1970s all the way to his latest, as-yet unexhibited creations.
