At 6pm on Wednesday 1st February 2017, in the ‘Printmaking Crossovers’ exhibition spaces at GASK, a book launch will be held for a new monograph on the work of Jiří Beránek. The monograph maps out Beránek’s career as a sculptor spanning almost fifty years. His work is reflected on in texts by Ivan Neumann, Alena Potůčková and Silvie Stanická together with a brief essay by Richard Drury. Among the wide selection of reproductions of Beránek’s sculptures you will find views of his exhibition ‘Interlude’ held at GASK in 2015. The book was conceived and edited by Silvie Stanická, a lecturer at the Faculty of Multimedia Communications of Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín. The book launch will also be the opening ceremony of ‘Like Wandering Birds’, a pop-up exhibition of Beránek’s drawings that will be introduced by Dušan Brozman, a curator and lecturer at the Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň. The exhibition runs until the 12th February. You are warmly invited to attend!
About the artist
The sculptor Jiří Beránek (born 1945) belongs to the generation of artists who, as fresh graduates of art colleges, had to define themselves in their work during the repressive period of hard-line ideology and resulting ‘moral unease’ in Czechoslovakia during the 1970s. The location and symbolism of Beránek’s sculptures and installations are determined above all by focal points of historical human activity or actions of nature in the landscape. The site in question is often an intersection between the forces of nature and human fate. Beránek’s sculptures are underpinned by a highly-focused process: with a succession of axe cuts and mental reflections, an object materialises that seeks out correlations with its surroundings and with the past. The sculptural object thus becomes a half-open vessel, a complex record and a ritual instrument of communication at the same time. Since 2005 Professor Jiří Beránek has taught at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art of the University of West Bohemia in Plzeň, where he heads the Sculpture and Space Studio.
