Triumf smrti

2013

olej na plátně, 200 * 220 cm

GASK O 1924

Josef Hnízdil se soustředí v osobní i obecné rovině na člověka a jeho příběh, na jedince a jeho mizení ve sféře nebytí. V široké škále malířských i sochařských možností od portrétů konkrétních lidí přes abstrahovaný portrét v podobě lebky až k existenciálnímu zobecnění v krajině lidských lebek nastoluje způsoby překračování fyzických hranic, krok do oblasti metafyzické. Bezútěšné krajiny lebek vznikaly paralelně s malbou přímořských útesů drsné krajiny Bretaně a Normandie. Archetypální krajiny skal a hlubin moře vyjadřují nekonečný prostor podobně jako krajiny lebek v několika variacích tématu Triumf smrti (2012–2014). Tradičními malířskými postupy světelné modelace, využívajícími kontrastu světla a tmy, buduje prostory mentálních krajin.

GASK O 1924

On a personal and universal level, Josef Hnízdil focuses in his art on people and their stories, and on the individual and their disappearance within the realm of non-existence. Working with a broad range of sculpture and painting techniques from portraits of specific people to abstract portraits in the form of skulls or even generalised existential landscapes of human skulls, he depicts ways of transcending physical boundaries and taking a step into the realm of the metaphysical. His sombre skull landscapes were made at the same time as his paintings of cliffs on the rugged coastline of Brittany and Normandy. His archetypal landscapes of cliffs and the deep sea express an infinite space reminiscent of the skull landscapes of The Triumph of Death (2012–2014). He builds mental landscapes by working with traditional painting techniques such as the use of the contrast between light and dark to model his subjects. His art is a distinctive testimony to the ambivalent nature of our existence, including its lightness and heaviness (burdens and limitations) and, in this context, also explores the taboo subject of death.

Josef Hnízdil works outside of established groups and movements. After living in exile in France and New York City, he returned to the Czech Republic in the early 1990s. In his stylistic approach, he seeks inspiration from old and modern masters and the timeless theme of the finality of existence.
