Tlustá zvířata Kurta Gebauera, vykrmená a často „spokojeně“ uvězněná ve svých klecích, byla v období nástupu normalizace autorovou satirickou odpovědí na pokušení pohodlnosti a bezproblémové existence, jemuž byli vystaveni lidé v totalitní společnosti výměnou za poslušnost a konformnost. Sám autor svá vycpaná obtloustlá zvířata označuje za „alegorie lidské malosti“.

Cílevědomý bulteriér (1970) patří mezi Gebauerovy legendární práce a zároveň je jedním z prvních děl, která autor vytvořil z vycpaného textilu. Když v roce 1970 připravoval model plastiky pro sochařské sympozium na Boháňce, původně s úmyslem provést dílo v kameni, zvolil postup vycpání šité textilní figury. Po dokončení modelu zjistil, že funguje samostatně, jako autonomní dílo. Obtloustlý pes slepě následuje pokyny ruky/rukavice, která se pohybuje na udici připevněné k tělu zvířete a ukazuje mu „správný“ směr. Vedle kriticky-groteskního podtónu dílo svou technikou parodicky zdůrazňuje snahu potlačit „vysoké umělectví“ spjaté tradičně se specifickým autorským rukopisem.

Po kamenosochařské škole v Hořicích vystudoval Kurt Gebauer sochařství na pražské Akademii. Patří k členům Volného seskupení 12/15 Pozdě, ale přece a už od počátku své tvorby je zároveň neúnavným aktivistou, který prostřednictvím svých sochařských realizací iniciuje dialog s veřejností a objevuje možnosti veřejného prostoru. Od 90. let působil na VŠUP jako pedagog ateliéru veškerého sochařství.

Kurt Gebauer’s fat animals, well-fed and often ‘contentedly’ trapped in their cages, were a satirical response to the temptations of comfort and trouble-free existence offered to the citizens of totalitarian Czechoslovakia in exchange for obedience and conformity. Gebauer himself calls his rotund animals ‘allegories of human frailty’.

Ambitious Terrier (1970) is one of Gebauer’s legendary pieces and also among the first to be made of stuffed fabric. In 1970, while working on a model for a sculpture for a symposium in the village of Boháňka (which he originally planned to make from stone), he chose to work with a sewn fabric figure. After completing the model, he found that it worked on its own, as an autonomous work of art. The plump dog blindly follows the instructions of a hand/glove suspended from a rod attached to the animal’s body, pointing it in the ‘right’ direction. In addition to possessing critical-grotesque overtones, the work’s technique parodically emphasises the desire to suppress the ‘high artistry’ traditionally associated with a distinctive signature style.

After graduating from the stonemasonry school in Hořice, Kurt Gebauer studied sculpture at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts. He is a member of 12/15 Better Late Than Never art group, and has been a tireless activist throughout his career, using his sculptural works to engage the public in dialogue while exploring the possibilities of public space. He taught sculpture at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design from the 1990s.
